Characteristics
Narrow black barred rufous on underparts, red wingbar and white fuzzy tail bar. Head throat and hind neck black, more dark brown on back. Primaries and secundaries rufous white a white tip. Long yellow legs with a black beak.

In suriname confined to the coastal mangroves and outer rivers where
it is the most characteristic hawk.
Coastal lowland magroves, savannas and swamps.
The nest is bult of twigs lined with grass. Clutch size 1-2 eggs laid at the start of the rainy season in Suriname. No further data available.
Mostly, some say exclusively, crabs which are caught with a sot dive from a low perch.
This species has a large range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 170,000 km2. It has a large global population estimated to be 10,000-100,000 individuals (Ferguson-Lees et al. 2001). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e., declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Sedentary in all of its range.
