Kenmerken

Vliegt laag in wig- of lijnformaties.

Status

This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 10,000,000 km². It has a large global population estimated to be 1,000,000-1,600,000 individuals (Wetlands International 2002). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. (bron Birdlife.org)

Cormorant status Least Concern

Migratie

Interpretatie
Hoogste aantal bezette nesten aanhouden.

Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle

On the Internet not many sites can be found which dedication is solely to the birds of Surinam.  In my despair to identify a beautiful raptor photographed between Zanderij en Berlin I send a mail to Jan Hein Ribot, who is the webmaster of the oldest and probably best website on Surinam birds. It turned out to be a Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle (Spizastur melanoleucus).

The species was presented at that site as bird of the month. It made me realize how rare this bird was so far up North (near civilization) in Surinam.

Other sites dedicated to the birds of Surinam are my own sites: Surinam birds and Planet of Birds the latter being a work in progress.

The unknown bird, all relaxed and beautiful

Outside my home city, Almere, a beautiful birding place has been added. This is the correct verb, Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands, if not western Europe. 5 decades ago its ground was still sea-bottom. The architects building this city had a major joyride, all was for the taking, nothing was built. Added a park or extending its touristic value is like making a sandwich. This city’s surroundings are proof that God has a really good support network when it comes to developing nature. In Almere everything is young, especially nature.

The city ended up being a huge commmuting community (it is near Amstedam and much much more affordable) surrounded by some amazing specie rich nature parks. The irony is the Oostvaardersplassen, one of Holland’s most famous and specie-rich nature reserves, developed unintentional, unlike all else in Almere. Due to a lack of resources a large patch of land, prone to be industrialized, was neglected and became the Oostvaardersplassen. If you are a birder and in Holland, a must see area, next to the (very) low mountains in the south , the interior park (Veluwe) and the Northern coastline.

Anyway, just recently the municipals added a new luxury villapark, including 2 huts for nature observation along the edges of the Lepelaarsplassen, another beautiful and bird rich area. I took the pictures from one of the new spotting huts or observation cabinets (? is that a term).  I will not discuss my feelings about the contradiction of expending the city border very close to the protected nature areas and the opportunities of watching the birds even more up close. Money talks and I am a die hard birder, that is all have I to say about that.

I have no clue what kind of duck is lurking at the water here. Pictures are taken with a nikon D90 with a Sigma 170-500 at 450.   Beautiful bird, any ideas on this one ? Here is another picture.

Characteristics
Fairly small compared to other members of the Buteo genus, the Roadside Hawk can be identified by its lengthy tail and disproportionately short wings. The breast and underparts of the bird are barred brown and white and the tail has four or five grey bars. The eyes of the Roadside Hawk are usually yellow in color and rufous patches on the bird’s wings can be observed while the hawk is in flight.

Bare-necked Fruitcrow (Gymnoderus foetidus)

Bare-necked Fruitcrow determination

Bare-necked Fruitcrow (Gymnoderus foetidus)

The male is mainly blue-black with silver-grey wings. It gets its name from the blue bare skin on its neck which is all crinkled and folded. The eyering is also bare and blue. The female lacks the grey wings and has much less bare skin on the head.

Conservation status
Bare-necked Fruitcrow status Least Concern

It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical swamps. It is usually found along rivers or beside lakes where it is normally in groups when perched and conspicuous when flying.

The nest is a small cup made out of lichens and lined with fungus placed about 8 meter above ground. Clutch size is one egg.

Forages for fruit by perching and picking food, also feeds on large insects like grasshoopers and dragonflies. These are hunted by wing and (unlike onther cotinga’s) by foot. This species will run actively on branches chasing prey.

This species has a large range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 5,300,000 km². The global population size has not been quantified, but it is believed to be large as the species is described as ‘frequent’ in at least parts of its range (Stotz et al. 1996). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e., declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Moves regularly in high flying flocks, it is unknown if these movements are just local or part of a migratory pattern.

Best birding places: Paramaribo

In fact Suriname is one huge birding place. It all depends how far you are willing to go. If you want it all, the best places are in the rainforest, only reachable by plane or boat. It is impossible to this on your own, you will need guidance. If you want to explore the coastal plain it is a lot easier, most places are easily visited by car. Allthough the roads are usually only four wheel drive suitable.

In the coastal plain around Paramaribo these are the places to visit :

Weg naar Zee, easily found and the roads are OK. Lots of species and beware lots of snakes. if you dont know anything about this kind of habitat, stay on the road.

Colakreek, easily found and the roads are OK. The perfect birding spot to see the small birds, just outside the park. it is white sand savannah with patches of rainforest bordering.

Zanderij, easily found and the roads are partially moderate or bad (after heavy rain)the savannah and forest just behind the airport offers a wealth of species.

Cultuurtuin, easily found and the roads are OK. This cultivated park (lots of joggers and birds) offers a wealth of flowers and fruit trees, attracting numerous species.

Coffee plantations, easily found and the roads are OK, just over the bridge in Paramaribo (there is only one) across the suriname river, beautiful driving and stopping to bird. Just be early and be amazed. The coffee plantations are all abandoned now, but the birds dont care.

Leonsberg, easily found just outside Paramaribo (a bus will stop) with a restaurant and boat rental. Just walk along the river or take a boat to cross it, lots will happen. Especially if the tide is low.

Sitting in the garden, getting comfy.

Since my wife is from Suriname I have visited the country several times the past few years. My in laws own a farm like house surrounded by a huge patch of land with scattered trees, scrub, vegetables and lots of swamp. In fact a small bird paradise. Last year was the first time I used a photo camera instead of just my spotting scope and binocs.

So here is some of the highlights from that holiday in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. In fact in percentage Suriname has the most undiluted rainforest compared to any other country, over 80%. Only the coastline is inhabited by a nice mix of cultures. Being histoically a sugarcane and coffee plantation economy based on slavery, several colonizers brought different kind of people to the country. If you want to know more about this country with its just under 500.000 people, visit it !

Birding in Suriname is like being a sweet tooth in a candy store with unlimited and free resources. Every morning I sat on my little garden bench and just looked around. if you are really early, just before dawn, bats are the kings of the air. With the sun rising the first birds to appear are cattle egrets, followed by noisy great kiskadees, belonging to the most abundant species in Suriname. Next several species in random order, black vultures usually in small flocks of up to ten birds circle the sky looking for anything dead. They will actually eat dry lizard skin of a three day old road kill. Also the unavoidable blue-grey tanager and its congener the palm tanager are in every tree with rotten or bruised fruit. Mostly accompanied by the silver-beaked tanager and the small and beautiful gem the tody-flycatcher. A marvel of motion and funny behaving, catching insects attracted to fruity sweetness After drinking my coffee, I have to socialize a bit with the all day around family living on the same grounds.

Walking a patch of swamp in Wanica

My inlaws own a huge patch of land around their farm. For the better part it is all swamp with some trees and a small pond, which inevitably contains krobia and some kwikwi, the local, very ugly and tasty freshwater fishes. The first bird to attract attention will be the Wattled Jacana, a noisy high-legged and beautiful bird found near almost every water surface outside the city. It is often accompanied by the striated heron in the same habitat. Along the ditches the white-headed water-tyrant and the pied water-tyrant are abundant as are the yellow-chnned spinetail and the snail kite.

Next an easily scared yellow-headed caracara or a laughing falcon will honor you with their presence. The first looking for easy prey like carrion, eggs or fledglings, the second is a snake-eater. In a tree with hanging nests looking like socks a colony of crested oropendola’s noisily noticed you. The larger male with several females have an unbelievable clocking and gurgling sound. Watch that tree carefully because small flycatchers are bound to be found in the same tree. Just along the road at mid-tree level a small docile bird might watch you, it is a pied puffbird. It builds its nest in a hole in a termite colony and also feeds on termites and other bugs.

This little bird is one of my favorites, it is easy to approach and has a certain contemplating flair about it.

In a fruit tree palm tanagers, blue-grey tanagers and silver-beaked tanagers are fighting for bruised fruit. Just below it a shiny cowbird young is fed by its much smaller southern house-wren parent.

Surely you will encounter several tody-flycatchers, kiskadees, blue-winged swallows, green or amazon kingfishers, red-breasted blackbird, guianan piculet, bronzy or paradise jacamar and several elaenia’s, parakeets, seedeaters, hummingbirds (most likely the black-throated mango or even the green-throated mango) and tanagers. Don’t sit in swampy areas because some little lice will make you scratch your pubic area for days. One of the highlights to me was also a black-collared hawk, a locally abundant fish-eater. Finally the blue-backed grassquit and the bananaquit can’t be missed, the first doing his strange display ritual by flying up and down from the same perch straight in the air while singing, the second is found in every sugary fruit plant or tree. All this from just walking along a zwamp (as the small swampy areas are called). If you return for a few days early in the morning or just before dusk, around a 100 species might cross your path.
